How to Style Classic Stripes in a Modern Way

I know I often talk about trends here at The Brunette Nomad. I love to show my readers how they can incorporate the season’s latest trends into their wardrobe with items they already own or to expand their fashion mentality. We often think I can’t wear that color or I would never look good in that, but as I always say it is how you wear it. However, you can’t start exploring trends unless you have those good classics and basics to build upon.

In today’s post, I want to share how you can style classic stripes in a more modern and unexpected way. Let’s update this wardrobe staple.

We have often been trained to steer clear of horizontal stripes as they can make you look wider than you are (this is true in some cases), however, what I love about this classic stripe top is the belted tie around the waist. It is so flattering and helps to create that coveted hourglass shape we all love. The belted tie detail also adds that extra element of interest to what would have been a basic stripe top.

If you ever want to wear a horizontal stripe but are unsure how this print will look on your shape, try finding a top with a similar tie front or belted detail. When in doubt opt for smaller stripes rather than the larger print I’ve chosen here. Classic stripes will never go out of style so if you already don’t own a striped tee, I highly suggest adding one to your wardrobe.

It’s something you can easily throw on for running errands, having lunch with friends, and could even make an appearance for a date night when paired with the right accessories. Check out this previous blog post where I break it down step-by-step my guide for looking stylish with simple pieces. I call it my lazy girl’s guide to looking put together. It’s basically what I live by.

To complete the look, I threw on my favorite metallic mules (which I have worn every season since I purchased them), ripped denim to make the look more casual, and my most prized handbag. This new version of the epi leather is meant to resemble denim so I just love pairing them together.

Do you love classic stripes or are they too boring for you? How would you style this look? Let me know in the comment section below!

I really like that the top is almost like a wrap top. That bag and those mules are cute too. #scsister

I love that this is simple yet trendy. There’s a lot of trend styles that scares me! I love the bow for added style and a twist!

I totally agree with you that we are taught to stay away from stripes. However, this top is so flattering on you! I agree, if you have the right stripe and style it correctly, you can definitely pull it off. Thanks for sharing!
