I am the type of girl who loves an easy and efficient getting ready process, though it may not seem like it. We are all busy and there are so few hours in the day so I want to make sure that I can quickly choose items from my wardrobe, and easily make a look that says I tried – when in reality it took me no time. Sometimes it feels like magic.
This is what I call buying “smart”, and this flowy mini dress is just that for me. Keep reading to see how I styled this dress that will work for any occasion.

It’s not often that I get to wear a mini dress in the winter where I live. This time of the year I go into my survival mode, which is the season for hefty coats and being bundled up in layers in the hopes of staying warm. I do miss the versatility of Dallas weather where I could easily wear this outfit without a coat. In reality, I was freezing during this shoot, but that is the behind the scenes of blogging.
WHAT IS BUYING SMART?
This is how I classify my current buying philosophy, and wasn’t something I even figured out until after college. It was probably because I started to use my own money for the first time. When you earn the paycheck it makes you think twice about what you buy. Are all of those early mornings worth this item?
Buying smart means carefully curating your closet so it all goes together, and having go-to items that will elevate your look. A quick test to know when I’m practicing my own philosophy is to think of how I could wear this specific item with current pieces I already own. If I can only think of one item in my wardrobe that this would easily pair with then it probably isn’t the best option. It will leave you in the situation of constantly feeling like you have nothing to wear. Been there and done that!
I love the look of black tights and a mini dress in the winter.
Not only does it keep you warm, but it looks very sleek when paired with black boots. I paired my flowy mini dress with my favorite Stuart Weitzman suede boots, which brings an element of luxe and texture to any look. Personally, I would still wear this outfit at night for a dinner date or drinks with friends. If you prefer a heeled option for nighttime, you could opt for the Stuart Weitzman Tieland Over the Knee Boot or a pair of simple black pumps. Every woman should have a good pair of black pumps in their wardrobe.
What I love about this look is that just by changing your footwear or adding a dark lip color, you are ready for the night. This is what the buying smart philosophy is all about. A classic and quality black boot will never go out of style, and will last you for many years. While this mini dress may be considered trendier, it has classic elements like the pussybow tie on the front and the print is more muted so it won’t scream a specific trend.
If you live in a warmer climate, you can remove the black tights and pair this dress with some black sock booties. If you want to go really trendy, try some metallic booties like this fun pair from Loeffler Randall. I’m obsessed with them!
