Silk Scarves: My Fashion Secret Weapon

I feel like everyone has their fashion secret weapon whether they realize it or not. It’s that one item that instantly transforms any look from simple to wow. For some, it may be statement earrings or a bold red lip. What is mine? A colorful silk scarf.

I have long been collecting silk scarves and have found them to be a chic accessory that people often forget about. Silk scarves seemed to be associated with grandmas or older women wearing pearls and a matching tweed set. It was only recently that these accessories have come back into fashion are a fun way to liven up a handbag or just throw in your hair.

As I’ve gotten older I have realized that I like to start with basics and build up from there.

A silk scarf is the perfect fun accessory to add to a basic look. I’ve worn them with a black dress to add some interest to an interview look. I believe it gives them something to remember me by and shows a little bit of personality. However, my favorite way to style a silk scarf is with a simple jeans and tee outfit.

If you want to add interest to your look always opt for juxtaposition. I bet you are asking yourself what do you mean? I love mixing more traditionally “formal” items with casual pieces or something harsher like a leather jacket with a feminine blouse. It is definitely one way to guarantee that no one will have your exact look. Who needs carbon copies anyway?

So when in doubt go for juxtaposition. 

A silk scarf is not only an easy way to class up a casual look, but it is also an easy way to add color, especially if you are a fan of those neutral colors. Tie it around a ponytail, drape it over your shoulders, wear it as a belt, or knot it on a handbag. The possibilities are endless.
