I’ve never been one to do New Year’s resolutions. In fact, I kind of despise them. I know that sounds really harsh but hear me out. I feel like New Year’s resolutions are either so attainable that it doesn’t push us forward or so far out of reach that we can never achieve it and feel sad at the end of the year that we didn’t reach our goal.

I don’t believe you need a date on the calendar to make a change in your life and for that reason, New Year’s resolutions have always put a bad taste in my mouth. But after 2020 being such a difficult year for everyone I felt like I wanted to do something to encapsulate the growth and positivity that I need for this new year.

That means for the first time ever, I will be doing a word of the year.

What actually is a word of the year? This was a term I recently heard and felt like it was a much more attainable version of a New Year’s resolution. You choose a word that deeply resonates with you and will guide your actions, goals, and objectives for the year.

Rather than being stuck with specific goals that you set at the beginning of the year that possibly no longer matter as much to you in say 6 months, a word of the year leaves room for change and growth.

My word of the year is CONQUER!

When I first thought of doing a word of the year, conquer jumped out at me and I love how actionable it feels. In short, this means I want to conquer my mental health and get back to being a more positive person, conquer my job by learning as much as I can and acquiring more responsibilities, and conquer my side hustle – this blog.

Of course, growing in terms of numbers is always something we want, but more than that I want to produce high-quality content that inspires others and pushes me creatively.

At the end of 2020, I felt a bit burnt out…as I’m sure many of you did too. I want to make sure that I keep pushing myself in all aspects of my life and conquer sums all of that up into one nice actionable word!

If you’re interested in doing a word of the year for 2021 below are a few examples to help you get started:

– Flourish

– Inspire

– Growth

– Thrive

– Mindful (this was a close second for me)

– Passion

– Joy

– Transform

– Patience

– Focus

– Brave

– Simplify

Are you doing a word of the year for 2021? If so what is your word of the year? If not, feel free to share your goals or New Year’s resolutions in the comment section below!

I don’t make resolutions either. If I could pick a word right now I would go with “productive” based on a Pinterest quote I found late last year that really speaks to me.
