It seems like after watching the Netflix series Emily in Paris – the show you either love or love to hate – there has been a resurgence of French girl chic everywhere. One of my favorite French fashion staples is Breton stripes. Not only are they incredibly classic and stylish, but they have a history too.

Breton stripes originate from Brittany and were a part of a sailor’s uniform in the mid-1800s since they were considered easy to spot in a sea emergency. Leave it to the French to make anything about fashion.

Since then stripes have become a staple in every French girl’s wardrobe, and I think they should be in yours too!

One of my favorite things about Breton stripes is that they NEVER (truly never) go out of style and are like a blank canvas. Whether you consider your style sporty, classic, girly, or edgy there is a way you can wear stripes. My Parisienne stripe sweatshirt is perfect to pair with jeans or a satin slip skirt for a seasonal touch.

French fashion is all about classic and timeless pieces so style your stripes with jeans that have no distressing to instantly elevate your outfit. I paired the look with my Golden Goose sneakers for a more casual vibe and, to be honest, when am I not wearing them.

Next time I recreate this look, I envision wearing these classic leather ballet flats or a pair of neutral loafers (FYI – Sam Edelman makes the best Gucci dupes) to really channel my inner French girl.

If the French have taught us anything about fashion it’s that sticking with neutrals and classics is always the way to go.

I was today years old when I learned these stripes have a name and history. Awesome! Great picks.
